Signs your air conditioner needs repair

Hands-on inspection of a climate-control unit with a measuring instrument during training

A unit that turns on is not necessarily working well. Spotting a change in behavior early can prevent larger failures, particularly when it runs daily in heat and humidity.

It cools poorly or takes longer than before

First check that the thermostat is set to cool, filters are not clogged and doors and windows close properly. If airflow remains weak, the unit freezes or the compressor runs without reaching the set temperature, there may be issues with airflow, coils, controls or refrigerant. Do not add refrigerant without diagnosing a possible leak.

Unexpected water, noises or odors

Indoor dripping can point to a blocked drain, damaged pan or melting ice. Banging, strong vibration or squealing calls for inspection before further use. A musty smell may indicate dirt or trapped water; a burning smell means turn the unit off and seek service without opening electrical components.

Urgent electrical warning signs

  • The circuit breaker trips repeatedly.
  • You see sparks, smoke or a hot wire or plug.
  • Water is near electrical connections.

What to do before you call

Note the make and model, when the issue began and photograph any error code. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker or handle refrigerant or wiring. If there is no immediate hazard, this information helps the technician prepare; if you see smoke or sparks, safely disconnect the system and seek urgent assistance.
