The project
High-occupancy corporate offices have an air quality problem that conventional air conditioning alone does not solve: as occupancy builds through the day, CO₂ concentration rises, indoor air quality degrades and cognitive performance drops — even when the temperature feels comfortable.
Mecatecnia implemented for the World Bank Group's Santo Domingo office an air renewal system built around Lossnay energy recovery units, engineered specifically to control CO₂ concentration in operational work areas without adding significant load to the existing climate control system.
How the system works
The Lossnay system runs in parallel with the building's air conditioning. It does not replace it — it completes it.
- Fresh air intake — Lossnay units draw fresh outdoor air through intake points installed in the building facade or roof.
- Enthalpic heat exchange — before injecting outdoor air into the interior system, the enthalpy exchanger pre-cools it using the energy of the stale indoor air being extracted simultaneously. This significantly reduces the thermal burden the outdoor air would otherwise add to the AC system.
- Fresh air injection — the pre-cooled air enters the climate control distribution system and reaches the operational work areas with controlled CO₂ concentration.
- Stale air exhaust — CO₂-laden indoor air is simultaneously extracted and discharged outdoors.
The result is a continuous air renewal cycle that keeps CO₂ below performance-affecting thresholds without creating a disproportionate energy cost.
What was installed
- Lossnay energy recovery units — positioned at strategic points to cover the highest-occupancy operational areas.
- Intake and exhaust ductwork — fresh air admission and stale air extraction infrastructure, coordinated with the building structure.
- Custom airflow diagram — the system design defined admission, internal distribution and extraction routes to ensure full coverage of all critical CO₂ zones.
What this demonstrates
Indoor air quality is a baseline standard in international corporate facilities. This project demonstrates that Mecatecnia has direct experience installing energy recovery air renewal systems in high-demand corporate environments — facilities where the system must perform without interrupting office operations and without imposing a meaningful additional energy cost.
Questions that typically come up after seeing this project
Does my office need an air renewal system if it already has air conditioning? It depends on occupancy and how sealed the space is. In offices with 15 or more people in a closed space for several hours at a time, air renewal becomes a performance requirement, not just a comfort consideration. Spaces with windows that open regularly have lower urgency. We assess this during the technical site visit.
Is the Lossnay system compatible with any existing AC installation? In most cases, yes. Lossnay units connect to the existing air conditioning system through supply ductwork. The installation does not require modifying the AC system — only integrating the Lossnay air intake and exhaust into the existing distribution circuit.
What is the actual energy saving from the enthalpy heat exchange? Enthalpic pre-cooling can recover between 60% and 75% of the thermal burden that unprocessed outdoor air would add to the AC system. In practical terms, introducing fresh air carries significantly lower energy cost than simply injecting unprocessed outdoor air.
